The [Milky Way] is a translation from Greek Γαλαξίας Galaxias, which is derived from the word for milk (γάλα, gala). This is also the origin of the word galaxy. In Greek myth the Milky Way was caused by milk spilt by Hera when suckled by Heracles. - Courtesy of Wikipedia.org - [link]
Watching the old documentary mini-series "Cosmos" created by Carl Sagan has really captured me these last few weeks (i've watch an "episode" almost everyday or so, there are 13). At one point, he talks about how the Milky Way got it's name from an ancient Greek story about it being made by Hera squirting her milk from her breast across the sky. So, upon hearing that, you KNOW i had to draw it!!
So, there she is, wading, tumbling through space, creating the Milky Way (Heracles/Hercules not present). I supposed i could have thrown in some actual constellations, but i didn't bother. Who knows, there may be some there that i didn't intend!
Oh well. I just thought this was a beautiful idea, and wanted to put it down.
This was made with my mechanical pencil on my sketchbook paper, with the full intention to scan it and make it negative. Sort of a companion piece to my Celeste Moonbiter, and Gaia, and somewhat for my Light and Dark Goddesses.
(Originally, i intended to have a long curved stretch of earth at the bottom part of this picture, as if the viewer were looking at this sky from the earth, but i didn't want to mess with the reverse colors ... maybe next time).
Well I knew the story of Heracles suckling Hera's boobies to "become" her son, in a way, but I had never heard that part of it. I find out more and more that there's so much I don't know.
I really like what you have done here!
And you're welcome
